New York and Illinois Just Passed Deadly Assisted Suicide Legislation. We Must Stop it From Happening in Minnesota.

In Minnesota, there are proposed bills (SF 3215/HF 2998) that would legalize physician-assisted suicide. It is vitally important for everyone to contact their legislators and urge them to oppose any such legislation in our state.

Scary facts about assisted suicide:

• A slippery slope of death: Assisted Suicide is now the 5th highest cause of death in Canada after being legalized in 2016. Surveys show the top reason people opt in to assisted suicide is that they don't want to be a financial or physical burden to loved ones. No one should feel pressured into ending their life.
• Assisted suicide is not compassionate: A doctor prescribes a lethal drug cocktail that a person picks up at the local pharmacy, grinds up into a soft food, and ingests. The person may not die for hours or even days. There are no requirements for a witness or notification of family.
• It targets the elderly: Elderly in Minnesota have a higher rate of suicide than any other age group – double the teen suicide rate. Yet a proposed physician-assisted suicide bill does not require a mental health evaluation to screen for depression.
• Doctors opposed it: The American Medical Association and dozens of other medical groups oppose PAS. The AMA says, “Physician-assisted suicide is fundamentally incompatible with the physician’s role as healer.” Physicians are entrusted with saving lives, not ending them.
• It would disproportionally affect the vulnerable: Major disability rights groups, including the national Council on Disability, oppose PAS. Disabled people already face prejudice from doctors and people who assume they’re “better dead than disabled.” Assisted suicide encourages this kind of prejudice. People with disabilities deserve care, not suicide.
